PostDocs

It is beneficial but not certainly not required if you have a reasonable chance of getting a fellowship to support your stay in our lab in Freiburg.
Physician scientists (M.D./Ph.D.)
Highly motivated and qualified medical doctors (M.D.) may pursue an academic career by combining scientific work in our lab with clinical training in the Department of Nephrology. You will work in the lab and participate in a well-organized clinical curriculum to guarantee the best scientific and clinical training possible. Interested individuals may participate in a newly established M.D.-Ph.D. program of the Collaborative Research Centre 850. After a six-year training period, the candidate should be board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Nephrology, and either continue in the department as a junior faculty member, pursuing independent research, or seek additional qualifications in collaborating laboratories or hospitals, in Germany or abroad. The typical applicant has successfully finished a doctoral thesis in a basic science laboratory, and wants to combine state-of-the-art research in basic sciences with excellent clinical training. Graduate students
Our department is not only dedicated to research, but is equally committed to teaching and training. We view the training of graduate students of all branches of life sciences as a great opportunity to convey our excitement for research. To provide every student with a concise and efficient training experience, we offer a biannual workshop that combines an overview in molecular biology techniques with “hands-on” training in the lab. Over a two-week training period, all students starting their doctoral thesis in our laboratory will learn the basic standard techniques, and obtain a theoretical framework to understand the ongoing research in the laboratory. Medical thesis (Doktorarbeit), Diploma in Molecular Medicine/Biolog
Our department is not only dedicated to research, but is equally committed to teaching and training. We view the medical doctoral thesis and the diploma thesis for students of Molecular Medicine or Biology as a great opportunity, to convey our excitement for research to students.
To provide every student with a concise and efficient training experience, we offer a biannual workshop that combines an overview in molecular biology with “hands-on” training in the lab. Over a two-week training period, all students starting with their doctoral or diploma thesis in our laboratory will learn the basic standard techniques, and obtain a theoretical framework to understand the ongoing research in the laboratory. PhD students of the Spemann Graduate School of Biology and Medicine will participate in this workshop and contribute to lively discussions.
The typical medical thesis requires around eight months of experimental work at the bench. The work will be closely supervised by an experienced postdoc or group leader. To ensure that the work can be successfully completed, we assign clearly defined projects. All methods are established in the lab. Students often voice their interest to continue with some part-time research after the completion of their thesis. We therefore hire interested students as “Studentische Hilfskräfte (Hiwis)”, and appreciate their contribution to the ongoing research projects. Several students have performed guest rotations in other laboratories in Germany or abroad (Harvard, Johns Hopkins University, …). These activities are supported by either stipends or departmental funds, and provide additional learning experience both on a personal and scientific level.
Technicians – MTA, BTA, CTA
The research technicians in our laboratory work closely together with group leaders, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. If you are interested to work in a friendly team, you like the challenge of learning new techniques, and you like to think and work independently, please apply. You will find a great group of highly motivated colleagues that organize weekly meetings to advance their theoretical knowledge and trouble-shoot lab problems.
